Our New Year Begins~ What We Have Been Up to Part II

We homeschool year-round and over the past two years we had begun our new homeschool year in the beginning of March.

I thought I would share our new plans for the new year~ We are making changes in some areas and no changes in other areas that have been working well.

Our Math~ Lesson Template with Binder and Math Notebook Explanations

We have been ill this week, colds and flu so not much has been getting done in the area of studies. While the boys are resting I did have time to pull together my plans and ideas for how we are using MOTL for our youngest and I thought I might share.  You can find the Template for Math On The Level and also the Math Binder and Notebook Explanation~
You can find these pages in two places my homeschool launch page and also below on Scribd ( my first attempt at using ) ~

What We Have Been Up To Lately~ Part I

We have been really busy~ I suppose you could say busier than most. The month of February is just flying by us and we have lots going on with our learning ~

Recently my brand new laptop that I had gotten in July crashed on me~ We found out that it was my hard drive that just completely crashed and they are now having to re-build it so I am working now without my laptop and all my information I have accumulated. Fun~ ( but not really, I had lots of articles started for posts I had outlined previously that have been lost so I am now having to start all over again and that is going to take some time and patience on my part) :)

As far as what we have been doing it has been a mixture of things; planning for a new year of learning, adjusting a few programs to meet their changing needs, looking ahead toward learning for highschool, making new friends, re-organizing our learning room to fit our new science things and probably a bunch of other things that I am forgetting~

A Website to Share-

I was searching for information this morning as I plan to re-vamp our math learning and also tweak some things/issues we are having with spelling which I will write about on another post since I am still gathering information and planning.
But while doing this I came across this site and  just had to share ~ I had not visited the Don Potter site in quite a while and was surprised when I saw how things had changed. I am way behind this afternoon on my planning since its the kind of site you can sort of get swallowed up by~ (in a good way though) not that is is overwhelming it is just that one resource leads to looking and reading another and then another and before you know it I look at the clock and I have been there for over an hour! Yup, its one of those sites.
I was happy to have found some great readers here and possibly some for our dictation. I also had been looking for supplemental learning materials and found just what I needed here. Be sure to check this site out when you have a chance. Don

Copywork and Cursive~

"Capital "G" is like a boat "my youngest explained this morning ~ he finds things to help him remember how to make those pictures in his head. This was one way he remembered how to make a capital "G".

Our youngest has taken to doing his copywork in cursive now, we are still practicing words, his signature and specific letter combinations.  Writing his copywork in cursive was entirely his idea~ it wasn't required because we use copywork heavily to encourage good writing and punctuation learning so I did not intend to add one more "layer" toward his copywork. But because he was so interested I let him go for it. ~

He came in a few times asking me certain letters as I could see him struggle a bit to get the pictures correct in his head ( remembering this kind of activity takes many skills all at once) to help him more with these pictures I showed him these videos as he needed ( we would fast forward through the beginning to get to the part we needed) he found it really helpful and once again it was a "visual way" of helping him see it, hear it to help internalize the information. He did great!

Writing Models for Learning~

I just had to share this writing model resource link this evening~ It is just excellent, especially for our visual more literal learners.. I have a few of those... I am excited about this because trying to teach a child with APD about thesis statements for his research report can get a bit tricky - I clicked on the model for research paper model 1 and found exactly what I was looking for~

We will probably be using this tomorrow morning actually as my teen is currently working on a research paper about the Conquistadors.  This will be really helpful. I hope you find this as helpful for your learners as I do~ !

Happy Writing!

What's Coming Up? Plans and Ideas for 2011~

The holidays are over with and we have been working in between snow storms, sickness and winter doldrums. With the New Year ahead of us I decided to outline some new ideas for articles I have planned;

* More Free Resources found
* Fun practice for rote learning- file folder games to create
*Organizing our Science Equipment
*Adding Weekly Wrap-Ups  on what we are working on
* Language Arts, breaking it all down ~ thoughts on learning spelling, dictation/copywork and more ~ how we have worked with LLATL
* Our new Reading/Spelling Notebook (with notebook pages created and shared for your own Notebook)
* Lapbooking ~ how we lapbook and some new units /folds I am creating
* Notebooking- how to keep track/store all those pages and some new ones I have created and what about creating some of your own?
* Math dilemma - following a program vs. working at our own pace, the options and opportunities when a programs never seem to be a real fit.
* Homeschool Freecycle~ a new facebook group and its benefits for us who home school

These are just a few  things I hope to be able to share and write about over the next few months. I am sure there will be many more also as we go into the New Year so "stay tuned" ~

If you like sharing resources you should check out LAH on Facebook~ it's there that I tend to share random links/resources I come across or things that we are thinking about ~ its a great place to correspond and share.
